Singapore Hawker Food : Teochew Kueh

Are U Hungry 😋?

@ Yuhua Food Centre, 347 Jurong East Avenue 1, Stall : Lai Heng Handmade Teochew Kueh #01-218

Ordered my favourite : Soon Kueh 2pcs and 2 pcs of Png Kueh 2pcs . Total : $3.60.

What’s so good 😊?

Owner, Mr Goh come to his stall very early in the wee hours of the morning to prepare his ingredients daily. Made fresh everyday with hand 🖐 đŸ€š crafted from the dough to the ingredients and to the folding and the pinching then to steaming and to frying ... I am happy to note that 2G (2nd Generation) are learning the OJT (On The Job) ... 😼 đŸ€© 👍

After 10mins of Q, due to social distancing, I have taken every opportunity to photo interesting close shots of their making of their amicable and delightfully QQ texture and tastefully Teochew Kuehs.

Its truly Old School with the traditional taste. The flattening of the dough w/ roller stick, the round patterns cut, removal, twist and turns of the folding of the dough, filling w/ their individual Kuehs of differing ingredients, using the white skin vs the red skin dough... closing the dough, knit & hand crafted individually b4 laying down onto the steaming layered wok ... it’s SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) and processes driven ... 😼 đŸ€© ⭐ 👍

Then, bringing the steaming wok layered trays to steam with specific timing and fire đŸ”„ control and the process repeat per batches ... 😼

Though I am not Teochew but has many Teochew friends ... I always loved to joke about this phrase in Teochew :”Teochew lang kar chen ang ang, ba si bo siang kang” - literally meant that Teochew people ass is red red, beat each other also never mind: meaning Teochew people are closely knitted people always helping and caring for one another , I think đŸ€” ... that’s so true ! 😼 đŸ€©

Back to the stall, my turn came. I ordered and requested for the steamed version of Soon Kueh x 2 and Png Kueh x 2 (glutinous 🍚) on takeaway and disposable mode then DIY with the black sweeten sauce and chillies đŸŒ¶.

Brought it out for photo eats !

Dipping to the Soon Kueh, still piping hot as it’s released from the steamer wok, the white translucent grossy skin so QQ and chewy and easy to bite off, next its strips of turnips (bang kwang) with dried shrimps đŸ€ w/ garlics flavourfully fried and mixed together ... that’s the oomph taste, that’s the Teochew taste !

Next, the pale red triangle đŸ”ș shapes with the tail arched, skin a little thicker but once you bite off, that’s where the glutinous rice pre-fried w/ ingredients of strips mushroom 🍄, peanuts đŸ„œ and shrimps đŸ€ revealed. That’s another great taste of Teochew flavour on its kueh.

On its signage, other type include : Chives, Vegetable cabbage đŸ„Ź...

You may have the steamed version or fried version. Typically, I like the steam than fried version as the texture differs though the fried type shall give u the QQ and crispness but that’s really your preferred style of eating, very individual liking to say ... 😼 đŸ€©

For tabao (take away) U can request the sauce : Dark sweeten sauce and chillies đŸŒ¶ packets and extra for plastic boxes etc.

It’s Teochew Kueh... Yummily 😋 Great 👍 !
