On September 11, 2001 nearly 3000 people were killed and more than 6000 were injured during the four coordinated terrorist attacks in the United States.
Four passenger airliners bound for west coast destinations (three headed to Los Angeles and one to San Francisco) were hijacked by 19 men affiliated with Al-Qaeda.
Timeline
At 8:46 am American Airlines Flight 11 flew into the North Tower of the World Trade Center and 17 minutes later, at 9:03 am, United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower. Both planes were traveling from Boston to Los Angeles.
At 9:37 am American Airlines Flight 77, traveling from Virginia to Los Angeles, strikes the Pentagon in Washington DC.
At 10:03 am United Airlines Flight 93, traveling from New Jersey to San Francisco, crashes in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
