New York City: How to find your ring size

A ring should fit correctly and feel comfortable on your finger so it is important to know your actual ring size. Don't wear a ring if it feels too tight or too loose.

The best and most accurate way to find out your ring size is to visit a jeweler's store although you can measure it at home.

Having in mind the following tips you can easily measure your ring size.

• A proper fitting ring should fit snugly, but not tight, on your finger and slide easily over your knuckle. Remember that if you can put it on your finger easier than taking it off then you have a great fit.

• Temperature, diet, medication and activity affect sizing thus you need your body temperature to be normal and natural when you get measured. It is preferable to do so after lunch and before dinner, at room temperature for more accurate results.

• Our dominant hand's fingers are usually half a size larger than the opposite hand so make sure you buy a ring for the right finger of the correct hand.

• Measure your finger 3-4 times over the course of the day.

• When in doubt order up half a size.

• If you are between two sizes go with the larger.

• When the knuckle is bigger than the base of the finger measure both places and pick a size in between.

Here are the two easiest ways to measure your ring size at home.

1. Measure your finger with a string or with a strip of paper (circumference)

• Take a thin strip of paper (around 1/4 inches wide and at least 4 inches long) or a piece of string (thread or ribbon can also be used) and wrap it snugly around the base of the intended finger.

• Mark the spot where the paper/string meets

• Measure the length of the thread/paper with the ruler

• Compare the measurement to a sizing chart

2. Measure the inner diameter of another ring

Grab an existing ring that fits your intended finger and place it against a ruler. Measure the diameter of the inside circle of the ring and compare it to a sizing chart.
