Costa Rica Weekly: September 15th, Happy Independence Day!

Let's celebrate our independence all month long, was a very long way to get our INDEPENDENCE.

So, we have to celebrate this important day.

Do you know why on September 15 we commemorate the Independence Day Celebration?

This is due to the fact that, in 1821, Costa Rica ceased to be under Spanish rule and became part of the Federation of Central American States. It is in honor of this historical fact that every September 15th we celebrate Independence Day.

We have being independent from the Spanish for 199 years, the whole country celebrates and that is when as Costa Ricans we bring out the colors white, blue and red.

The Independence Day of Costa Rica has been declared an official national holiday in the country and is celebrated with much joy and cheerfulness.  The national holiday is marked by raising the National Flag, patriotic parades and the singing of the National Anthem

But this year is going to be a bit different, its not going to be as joyful as every year.... We won't hear the children and adolescents dancing to the beat of the drums with their typical costumes and

national anthems.

However, we must be happy to know that we continue to celebrate our freedom, which today more than ever we exercise it with great responsibility by taking care of each other. As Costa Ricans, let's celebrate in our homes, wearing the colors of our flag, savoring our delicious dishes and keeping the spirit of Independence alive.

Costa Rica's National Anthem:

Noble patria tu hermosa bandera

Expresión de tu vida nos da:

Bajo el límpido azul de tu cielo

Blanca y pura descansa la paz.

En la lucha tenaz de fecunda labor

Que enrojece del hombre la faz,

Conquistaron tus hijos, labriegos sencillos,

Eterno prestigio, estima y honor, eterno prestigio, estima y honor.

¡Salve oh tierra gentil!

¡Salve oh madre de amor!

Cuando alguno pretenda tu gloria manchar,

Verás a tu pueblo, valiente y viril

La tosca herramienta en arma trocar.

¡Salve patria! tu pródigo suelo

Dulce abrigo y sustento nos da;

Bajo el límpido azul de tu cielo

¡Vivan siempre el trabajo y la paz!

The song was originally adopted in 1853, with the music composed by Manuel María Gutiérrez. Words by José María Zeledón Brenes were added in 1900.
