Legendary actor, Soumitro Chatterjee passes away from Covid complications. India can't stop weeping.




Soumitro Chatterjee, the 85-year-old actor, director, playwright, writer and poet was admitted to hospital in Kolkata on the 6th October after he was tested positive for coronavirus. From the time he was admitted to the hospital, his condition was just detoriating with time. The entire country was praying for his recovery, but fighting for life has not been easy. He passed away on 15th of November, leaving the entire country into tears. He was best known for his collaborations with director Satyajit Ray, with whom he has worked in over fourteen films. He has been starred in more than 300 movies. Soumitro Chatterjee had multiple honours and awards in his name. He was the first Indian film personality who was conferred with France's highest award for artists, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (1999). He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan (2004) and France's highest civilian award Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur (2017). He received two National Film Awards as an actor and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his work in theatre. In 2012, he received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest award in cinema given by the government of India for his lifetime achievement. In 2013, IBN Live named him as one of "The men who changed the face of the Indian Cinema". Besides his contributions to the Indian Film Industry, he was also known for his creativity. He has edited a literary magazine, published more than 30 books of essays and poetry, acted, directed and wrote numbers of play, and painted.



A man with irreplaceable talent, gone too soon. The nation couldn't just accept the death of such a legendary character. His contributions to Indian Cinema has been extraordinary, which will be cherished for ages to come. He'll always be immortal and will live forever through his beautiful pieces of art he has created over the years. It has been an absolute honour to watch him create masterpieces. May he shine like the brightest star in the night sky.
