I love the province of Limón and their culture, food and way of living.

Today they are celebrating the Black Day and Afro-Costa Rican Culture, which has been held for more than a decade at the initiative of the Black Ethnic Cultural Civic Committee.

The Black Ethnic Cultural Civic Committee was born in 1999 thanks to the vision of a group of Limonenses concerned about the loss of the values and cultural elements of black culture.

This date was chosen in commemoration of the First International Convention on the Situation of Negroes, which concluded on August 31, at Madison Square Garden, New York on August 31, 1920, and as a result of the discussions at that convention , "The Declaration on the Rights of Blacks" is promulgated.

In the 1980s, Costa Rica decreed August 31 as the celebration of "Black Day." Initiative that was promoted by the Union of Costa Rican Educators (SEC), in the administration of Rodrigo Carazo.

Later, another decree was signed that broadens the celebration as the "Black Day and Afro-Costa Rican Culture." Being April 26, 2018, the date on which Law 9526 is published in La Gaceta Digital, which declares August the Historic Month of Afro-descent in Costa Rica.

This celebration responds to the need to recognize the great contribution of Afro-Costa Rican culture to the country on an equal basis with the other contributions that other ethnic groups in Costa Rica have made.

If you come to Costa Rica, don't forget to visit Limón a province with amazing culture, beaches and biodiversity!
